Rosewood, and Black American History

January, 1923, Rosewood, Florida

was set aflame because a married white woman lied claiming that she had been sexually attacked by a black man when in reality she had been physically abused by her white lover. Certainly not the first time the black man had to carry the burden of the white man's crime.

In 1921 any excuse would do.

The entire Rosewood community came under armed attack by drunken racists that took great pleasure in destroying a town that was more prosperous than any of theirs.

Again, as so often is the case then and now, American trees grew "strange fruit" as black Americans were lynched in retaliation for a crime never committed. Terrorism in the United States is nothing new.

Death is not a pretty sight. Attached to this link is a photograph of one of the victims of Rosewood. Not for the squeamish. ROSEWOOD VICTIM

The people of Rosewood fled into the woods, hid in the darkness, and prayed for deliverance that did come.
